Updating your CK software and installing your Theme Pack

If you are installing a Theme Pack and are being prompted for an update, you will need to download and install the latest CK Browser update file.

If you get the update from the installation prompt, make sure you are connected to the Internet before proceeding with the update download. If the progress bar keeps counting up in time, please ignore it as it is not correct, and the file will download normally (for dial-up connections, this could take up to 45 minutes.)

If you go this route, download the update file to your Desktop, then double-click to install it. Make sure you remain connected to the Internet during installation as well. After updating, you can delete the downloaded file or save it somewhere else, and use your regular CK icon to run the program.

Can I save my Theme Packs to disk as a backup in case my computer crashes?

Yes. The Theme Pack file is only about 300K in size and will easily fit on a floppy disk for later use as a backup.

Do I need a CK cd installed before I can use a Theme Pack?

Yes. In order to install a Theme Pack/Plug In, you must first have one of the following CK CD's already fully installed: updated versions of Volume 1 or 2, Volumes 3 or 4, the Combo, Art of Creative Lettering, Wedding and/or Baby CDs....basically anything but the original Volumes 1 or 2. If you have the ability to put color fills in your alphabets, then you have a compatible version. (This means a full installation, where you do not need the CD to run the program. If you do not have the program fully installed, run the setup program and choose the Full Installation option.)

Macintosh: No CD is required prior to installation.

What are the proper steps for installation?

Please follow these instructions exactly for proper Theme Pack installation.

1. In order to install a Theme Pack/Plug In, you must first have one of the following CK CD's already installed: updated versions of Volume 1 or 2, Volumes 3 or 4, the Combo, Art of Creative Lettering, Wedding and/or Baby CDs....basically anything but the original Volumes 1 or 2. If you do not have the program fully installed, run the setup program and choose the Full Installation option.) Macintosh: No CD is required prior to installation.

2. Download the required files. For easiest use, download the files to your desktop. This way, when you're done downloading you'll find the files right on the desktop with all your other icons. When downloading is done, stay connected to the Internet, as you need to be online to complete the setup process.

3. After downloading, locate the file on your desktop and double-click it to run the setup program. Remember, you must be connected to the Internet because the setup program retrieves graphics files from our website during installation.

4. The browser update file is 5.9 megabytes in size, and can take up to 30 minutes to download on a regular dialup telephone connection. This is a one-time update, as future Theme Packs will run from this new broswer. Theme Pack files are about 300K in size, and can take up to 2 minutes to download on a dialup connection. In all, if you are installing a Theme Pack for the first time, the total file sizes are 8 megabytes which can take up to 40 minutes to complete on a regular telephone dial-up connection.

I have a required CD fully installed, but I still get a message saying to install the CK Browser. Why is this?

The Theme Pack setup file is looking for the file C:\CKBrowser. If it can't find the folder on your C drive, this error message will occur. The solution is to point the Theme Pack setup location the CKBrowser folder on your computer, wherever it may be.

For example, if you installed your CK software CD to a drive labeled D, you will need to point the setup file to the proper drive and folder. Or if you installed to a drive labeled F, you will need to point the setup file to the CKBrowser folder on your F drive.

Or, if you renamed the original CKBrowser folder something else altogether, make sure you point the setup file there. The point is, by default the Theme Pack setup file looks for C:\CKBrowser. If you don't have this folder on your computer, give the Theme Pack installation a hand by kindly showing it where to go.

I was unable to download after ordering or was disconnected. What now?

Log into the CK website with your username and password, and look up your order history. Then follow the links to your Theme Pack order. If you are not given access, it's possible that too much time has elapsed and we will need to send you links to your order. If this is the case, email us with your order number and Theme Pack name(s). We'll make sure you receive what you paid for.

Do I need to be connected to the Internet during Theme Pack installation?

Yes. During installation the Theme Pack setup pulls files off of our website and installs them on your computer. This makes the initial download file smaller and frees up bandwidth on our server. So make sure you're online during Theme Pack installation.

I seem to be missing fill colors after installation. What can I do?

Run the fill color maker again by starting the CK program, then press F11 on your keyboard. This will run through the process of creating all of the fill colors again, in case this process did not complete the first time around.

My new fill colors look different than the originals. Whay is that?

To reduce the download file size, the new Theme Packs use an auto-generating fill maker. This utility can't quite do the custom color touches that we were able to do by hand, and as such the fill colors may look somewhat different than the originals. However, you can copy fill folders of your choice from the CD and put them into the fills folder on your hard drive if you prefer the previous look. Follow these steps:

1. Place the desired CK CD in the CD Drive.
2. Double click the My Computer Icon on your desktop.
3. Click one time on the CD Drive and choose File-Open from the menu.
4. Open the Fills folder, locate the color folder you want, and click on it once.
5. Press Ctrl + C on your keyboard, or select Edit-Copy from the menu.
6. Click the Back button or Up button to go back to all of your computer's disk drives.
7. In My Computer, click once on the C drive (or other hard drive if the CK program was installed somewhere else) and select File-Open.
8. Locate the CKBrowser Folder and open it.
9. Locate the Fills folder and open it.
10. Locate the General Folder and Open it.
11. Press the Ctrl + V keys on your keyboard, or select Edit-Paste from the menu.
12. Say Yes to overwrite the files.
13. Open the fills folder you just copied and select one file.
14. Press the Ctrl + A keys on your keyboard, or choose Edit-Select All from the menu.
15. Right-click on one of the selected files and select Properties.
17. Uncheck the Read Only property.
18. Click Apply.
19. Close all open windows.
20. Run The CK Browser from your desktop icon.
21. Press F11 to refresh the new fill patterns in your browser.

How does the Custom feature work?

The Custom category allows you to store fill patterns and colors - just like a library. That way you can go back to your favorites later and choose from a few select fills, rather than searching through all of them again.

To add a fill pattern to the Custom library, right-click on one of your choice and choose Add To Custom from the menu.
